(e) One paragraph reaction to the piece that makes connections to course readings/discussion.
Specifically for week four, reflect on the models of authenticity discussed in Koops (2010).
The four models of approaching authenticity in the music teaching classroom according to the Koops (2006) article are: "the continuum model; the twofold historical/personal model; the threefold reproduction, reality, and relevance model; and the moving-beyond-authenticity model" (p. 24). Koops provides a synopsis of these four models and we see them span the ultra-conservative ideas of Palmer in his discussion of the continuum of authenticity to the opposite ideas of Santos in his rejection of "the concept of authenticity altogether, saying that the idea is based on the faulty notion that musical practices are static and that 'one true version' exists of a piece of music" (p. 26). To demonstrate both ends of the spectrum, I have included a recording by Vidar Lande - a Norwegian player of the hardingfele. Lande learned this violin-type instrument from his grandfather, one of his father's cousins, and prominent 'fiddlers' from the limited area of Southern Norway where this instrument was developed, along with its repertoire. The way in which Palmer's definition of authentic music is not a part of this recording is the geographical context. Although Lande grew up in the culturally correct geographic region in which this instrument is historically played, the recording was performed in a recording studio or a radio station. In order to be 'fully' authentic in Palmer's definition, the fact that it was not performed in its home setting.
I've included this second video which is an interview of author Andrew Potter by Professor Søren Askegaard at the University of Southern Denmark. Potter discusses his book entitled "The Authenticity Hoax" in which he discusses his views regarding the personal global ramifications of the seemingly ubiquitous search in today's society of seeking authenticity in all ways.
